18 Aug A New Chapter Begins: The Story Behind Botlierskop’s Reimagined Tented Lodge
After two and a half months of dedication, craftsmanship and careful attention to detail, Botlierskop Private Game Reserve proudly welcomed guests back to a completely reimagined Luxury Tented Lodge on 4 July 2026.
What began as an ambitious renovation evolved into a remarkable journey, one that combined exceptional design, skilled craftsmanship, resilience in the face of nature, and a deep appreciation for the landscapes that surround us.
A Vision Years in the Making
Long before the first hammer was lifted, this transformation began with an idea. For more than a year, architects, designers and the Botlierskop team meticulously planned every detail of the renovation. The goal wasn’t simply to refresh the lodge, but to create spaces that feel timeless, elegant and deeply connected to the surrounding wilderness.
Over approximately two and a half months, nearly every corner of the lodge was transformed. The exterior received a complete facelift, while the reception, bar, restaurant, bathrooms, pathways, pool area, kitchen decks, roof and gardens were all carefully redesigned. Every finish, every texture and every material was thoughtfully selected to create a luxurious yet authentic safari experience. The result is a lodge that feels both familiar and entirely new.
Welcoming Veld and Fire
At the heart of the renovation are two brand – new dining experiences.
Veld Restaurant celebrates the beauty of the landscape, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere where natural materials, earthy textures and refined finishes come together. The restaurant now features a magnificent hardwood floor that immediately draws the eye while adding warmth and character to the space.
Fire Restaurant celebrates the connection between people, food and flame, complemented by carefully curated wine pairings from our sommelier. Designed as an intimate gathering space, it honours the age-old tradition of cooking over fire, creating memorable dining experiences in an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and welcoming. Together, these spaces offer guests a new way to experience the flavours and spirit of Botlierskop.

Inspired by Nature
Throughout the renovation, the surrounding landscape served as the greatest source of inspiration. Botlierskop is privileged to protect rare and endangered fynbos species that occur only in the Western Cape (plants found nowhere else on Earth). It was therefore only fitting that these extraordinary botanical treasures became part of the lodge’s identity.
Beautiful handcrafted chandeliers feature carefully preserved fynbos, transforming one of the Cape Floral Kingdom’s greatest treasures into living works of art. The surrounding gardens were also thoughtfully redesigned to celebrate indigenous vegetation, strengthening the connection between the lodge and the landscape beyond its walls.
Even the decorative lighting tells a uniquely African story. Two striking chandeliers positioned beside the fireplaces in Veld Restaurant were handcrafted using plant material and dung collected from across the reserve. Through the creativity of talented artisans, an ordinary natural material has been transformed into an elegant design feature that reflects the authenticity of the African bush while celebrating sustainable craftsmanship.

The Story Beneath Our Feet
Perhaps the most extraordinary feature of the renovation lies beneath every guest’s footsteps.
The beautiful hardwood floor in Veld Restaurant is more than an architectural feature—it carries a remarkable story spanning decades of African history.
Its journey began during the Mozambican Civil War (1977–1992), a devastating conflict that displaced millions of people and forever changed the country’s landscape. During this turbulent period, a covert South African operative known only as “Pedro” lived deep within the ancient Ziwe Forest of central Mozambique while helping establish communication with RENAMO leadership during the peace process.
While living in one of Africa’s oldest untouched hardwood forests, Pedro’s knowledge of timber led to the careful hand-harvesting of a small number of magnificent Panga Panga trees. The logs remained hidden within the forest long after peace had returned. Years later, Pedro honoured an agreement made with local leaders and legally recovered the timber, ensuring that its story could continue.
Today, that same remarkable wood has found a permanent home at Botlierskop. As guests walk through Veld Restaurant, they are walking across timber that has journeyed from one of Africa’s ancient forests, through a chapter of conflict, to a place dedicated to conservation, peace and unforgettable experiences.

When Nature Had Other Plans
No major project is ever without its challenges.
During construction, the Western Cape experienced one of its most significant flood events in recent years. Roads throughout the region were submerged, communities were affected, and evacuations became necessary in several areas.
Although Botlierskop was fortunate to escape major damage, access roads required clearing before work could continue. Throughout it all, we remained grateful that our wildlife remained safe and that the reserve suffered only minor impacts.
Despite these unexpected obstacles, the renovation remained on schedule, a testament to the dedication, adaptability and determination of every individual involved.
