04 Feb Yellowwoods Reforestation – Bringing Ancient Forests Back to Life
Botlierskop and its surrounding landscapes once looked very different from today. Long ago, this region was a single, continuous stretch of dense, impenetrable rainforest. Towering indigenous trees, like the magnificent Yellowwood, rose to extraordinary heights, their vast canopies shading the forest floor. Some of these trees are believed to have reached up to 90 metres tall.
Though much of this ancient forest has vanished, remnants of these primordial woodlands still cloak the mountain slopes and deep ravines of the Garden Route. The African Wildlife Conservation Foundation (AWCF) in collaboration with Botlierskop, aim to restore this lost heritage. We want to bring back the grandeur of what once made this landscape so unique and beautiful.
Why Botlierskop is Unique
The 6000-hectare Reserve is part of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve, a region found nowhere else on Earth. This UNESCO-recognized site is the only place in the world where three global biodiversity hotspots converge, including habitats for our magnificent Yellowwood trees.
Yellowwood Trees and Their Importance
Yellowwood trees are rare and vital to their ecosystems. While they are not currently considered globally threatened, large, ancient specimens are extremely rare due to historical logging. These trees are keystone species, supporting biodiversity by providing habitats for numerous bird species and other wildlife.
The Yellowwoods Reforestation Project
AWCF has launched the Reforestation Tree Project in partnership with Botlierskop and the Friemersheim community, which makes up 30% of Botlierskop’s employees. This initiative is about more than just planting trees. It is a generational pact between people, nature, and the future.
Our goal is ambitious: to plant one million trees over the next five years. This living investment will contribute to cleaner air, restored ecosystems, and a more resilient environment for generations to come.
